Blood Rose Rebellion by Rosalyn Eves

The thrilling first book in a YA fantasy trilogy for fans of Red Queen. In a world where social prestige derives from a trifecta of blood, money, and magic, one girl has the ability to break the spell that holds the social order in place.

Sixteen-year-old Anna Arden is barred from society by a defect of blood. Though her family is part of the Luminate, powerful users of magic, she is Barren, unable to perform the simplest spells. Anna would do anything to belong. But her fate takes another course when, after inadvertently breaking her sister’s debutante spell—an important chance for a highborn young woman to show her prowess with magic—Anna finds herself exiled to her family’s once powerful but now crumbling native Hungary.

Her life might well be over.

In Hungary, Anna discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. Not the people around her, from her aloof cousin Noémi to the fierce and handsome Romani Gábor. Not the society she’s known all her life, for discontent with the Luminate is sweeping the land. And not her lack of magic. Isolated from the only world she cares about, Anna still can’t seem to stop herself from breaking spells.

As rebellion spreads across the region, Anna’s unique ability becomes the catalyst everyone is seeking. In the company of nobles, revolutionaries, and Romanies, Anna must choose: deny her unique power and cling to the life she’s always wanted, or embrace her ability and change that world forever.

My Review:

Absolutely wonderful, magic, self discovery, let's not forget Hungary  and high society.  I fell into its magic and the story kept me there always waiting for the protagonist  next move, and next event.  Romance, did I hear "romance?"  The author had written in everything  a fantasy read should have.  Not once did I doubt where the plot was going, I just wanted to get there, Pronto!  Received a free book in exchange for a review, Bloggingforbooks,  thank you.

In a land ravaged by civil war, the Mage King Kedehen initiates a ruthless purge of the magas. Eolyn, last daughter of the magas and sole heiress to their forbidden craft, seeks refuge in the South Woods. When she meets the mysterious Akmael, heir to the throne of this violent realm, she embarks on a path of hope, seduction, betrayal, and war. Desire draws Eolyn toward Akmael’s dark embrace, but fate binds her to Corey of East Selen, a cunning mage whose ambition challenges the limits of love and loyalty.

Can she trust either man?

Hunted in a realm of powerful wizards and brutal deceptions, Eolyn must find her own path to freedom or she will burn on the pyre.

My Review:

Absolutely wonderful fantasy that is a breath of fresh air.  Magic swept throughout but with something so different and pure.  I read a lot of fantasy books, but women’s magic detailed perfectly.

Rockstars Volume 1: Nativity in Blacklight Paperback – by Joe Harris

When a pattern of unsolved 'groupie' murders from the 1970s resumes in present-day Los Angeles, nobody makes the connection except Jackie Mayer, a rock nerd with a strange connection to music's urban legends and lost history and a mysterious, almost magical ability to 'see' what most people miss, and determine and divine what's going unreported. Together with muckraking music writer, Dorothy Buell, and his loyal cat, Skydog, they soon uncover an underground conspiracy involving a legendary band, demonic possession, and sacrifices to the dark gods of rock.
Fan-favorite JOE HARRIS (GREAT PACIFIC, The X-Files) and mega-talented MEGAN HUTCHISON deliver a deliver a crash course in rock 'n' roll's untold mysteries, secret histories and seedy, seamy underbellies.
Collects issues 1 through 5.

The Woodcutter King by Ærick Graham

The whilom Wardens of Wudelic woods are watchers and sentinels of the wild. Their roots run deep like the oaks and elders. Proud as towering pines. Their history is as an old language etched into ruins, they are now known as the Woodcutters.
Eerie for their Ghost-lights, glowing orbs that sit on their brow, folks are not sure what to make of them. The patriarch, Alaric, is a descendant of the first Warden, having the ear of the woodland goddess, Lhodyn. She is the embodiment of all that is wild - capricious at best, vindictive at worse.
War descends over Alaric's village as borderland marauders murder and enslave all. In reaction, Lhodyn seizes the village children and hides them within her woodland realm. Alaric is now faced with a hard choice, to remain and endure certain brutality while he searches for the young ones or flee with the remainder of his family, their best chance for survival.
The Woodcutter King is a fusion of narrative styles, blending literary sensibilities with fantasy aesthetics. The heart of the story is about a father and son and their experiences after a family tragedy. But in true epic fantasy form, there is more at play than their personal struggles. Something mysterious lays hidden in the Wudelic Woods, just as they are beginning to discover.
